Pilgrim's Rest - Patricia Wentworth

First published 1948; cover shown is an early paperback edition by Pan Books (UK). Alternate US title: Dark Threat.

A Miss Silver mystery which, for the most part, runs very much to the Wentworth formula: a family facing a number of strange deaths, a village with secrets.

This one stood out for me though: it features a diabolical murderess and a tense, enjoyable chase scene near the end of the book. The ending didn't run to the usual plan, either. I would have liked reading a sequel to the novel - if Wentworth had thought to write one.
